Behind the Scenes at Area 2 Farms
What You’ll See When You Tour The Farm
At Area 2 Farms, there’s nothing to hide, because we believe you should be able to see where your food comes from. Unlike most farms that rely on chemical sprays and conventional fertilizers, we invite you to step inside and see a different way of farming in action.
When you visit the farm, you don’t just hear us talk about our practices, you see them for yourself. From how we manage pests to how we build healthy soil, everything is on display.
Here's a closer look at some of what you’ll experience firsthand:
The System Behind the Farm
One of the first things you’ll notice at Area 2 Farms is that we don’t look like a typical farm. That’s because we grow food using SILO, our patented growing system that brings together cutting-edge robotics and age-old organic practices.
Check out SILO in action in this short video.
SILO moves our crops through a full day’s cycle (from sunrise to sunset) using a vertical track system and carefully tuned light and irrigation schedules. But while the technology is high-tech, the growing itself is deeply traditional: we grow everything in soil, without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
By automating how crops move, SILO allows us to care for each plant precisely, while preserving the essential parts of farming that matter. We won’t give everything away here; you’ll have to come see for yourself! But when you do, you’ll see how this system lets us grow a wide range of crops, year-round, just steps from where you live.
How We Manage Pests
Keeping plants healthy without chemicals doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means doing things smarter. We use a system called Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which focuses on prevention, observation, and the least invasive intervention possible.
Some of the fun, science-backed things we do as part of our IPM approach include:
Releasing ladybugs into the farm to feast on aphids and other soft-bodied pests
Scouting daily for signs of stress or infestation so we can respond before a problem spreads
Inoculating our soil with beneficial fungi and microbes, which form symbiotic relationships with plant roots and make it harder for pathogens to take hold
IPM lets us manage pests in ways that strengthen the entire ecosystem—not weaken it with synthetic sprays.
How We Feed the Soil So It Can Feed the Plants
We don’t use synthetic fertilizers because we don’t need them. Instead, we rely on vermicomposting (composting with worms) and other organic methods to enrich our soil.
Healthy soil does more than hold plants upright; it’s alive with microbial activity, constantly breaking down organic matter and making nutrients available to plants. That means our plants get what they need, when they need it, no chemical shortcuts required.
Want to See for Yourself?
We believe food should be something you trust, so we open our doors. Whether it’s a school field trip, a CSA member curious about how their greens are grown, or a neighbor dropping in for a tour, we love showing people how the farm works.
There’s nothing behind closed doors here. You’ll see the ladybugs, the compost bins, the farmers checking trays for pests. Because we’re not just growing food—we’re rebuilding the connection between people and what they eat.
At Area 2 Farms, we grow real food in soil using methods that work with nature, not against it. No chemicals. No secrets. Just good food, grown right.
