Grilling Greens

The grilling greens we grow at our organic farm in Arlington, VA are a green leaf lettuce that is so hearty that it is perfect for grilling. It might sound unconventional, but grilling lettuce brings out a unique flavor profile, adding a smoky, slightly charred taste that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes.

What are grilling greens?

Area 2 Farms’ grilling greens are typically green leaf lettuce that has a sturdy structure, making them ideal for cooking on a grill. This green is not only nutritious but also robust enough to withstand the high heat of grilling without wilting too quickly.

How to prepare grilling greens

Grilling greens are great to prepare on the grill at a summer BBQ. You can eat these grilled greens alone, or use them on top or a burger.

How to grill your grilling greens

  1. Preparation: Rinse the lettuce thoroughly and pat dry. Cut the lettuce heads in half lengthwise, keeping the core intact to hold the leaves together.

  2. Seasoning: Brush the cut sides with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of your favorite herbs or a squeeze of lemon juice.

  3. Grilling: Place the lettuce halves cut side down on a preheated grill over medium-high heat. Grill for 2-3 minutes until lightly charred, then turn and grill the other side for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  4. Serving: Remove from the grill and serve warm, drizzled with a vinaigrette or topped with grated cheese, nuts, or seeds for added texture and flavor.

They aren’t just for grilling

While grilling greens are perfect for the grill, they can also be used in other ways.

  • Salads: Chop leaves and use in all types of salads for a fresh and crisp texture.

  • Wraps: Use large, sturdy leaves as a healthy alternative to tortillas or wraps.

  • Toppings: Add grilled greens as a topping for burgers, sandwiches, or pizzas to elevate your dishes.
