Sunflower Seeds
As one of our pantry items, we’re delivering roasted sunflower seeds to our DMV community as a heart-healthy complement to the USDA certified organic vegetables grown at our organic farm in Arlington, VA.
What are Sunflower Seeds?
Sunflower seeds come from the towering sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus), native to North America and cultivated for thousands of years. After the yellow petals fall, the sunflower's head dries out, and the seeds are ready to be harvested. Farmers gather the mature heads, shake out the seeds, and clean them to prepare for roasting or storage.
Sunflower seeds are loaded with nutrients and flavor, making them an excellent addition to your pantry. While raw sunflower seeds are mild with a tender texture, roasting them enhances their natural oils, creating a deeper, nuttier flavor and a satisfying crunch.
How to Prepare Sunflower Seeds
These seeds are ready to eat straight out of the bag, but here are some easy ways to work them into your meals:
Simple Topper: Just sprinkle sunflower seeds over roasted vegetables, sautéed greens, or a crisp salad for a nutty crunch that ties it all together.
Crust for Proteins: Pulse roasted sunflower seeds in a food processor and use them as a coating for chicken, fish, or tofu for a crunchy, flavorful crust.
Soup Garnish: Add a scatter of roasted sunflower seeds to a bowl of carrot or potato soup for texture and a toasty kick.
Sunflower Seed Dressing
A creamy, nutty, and dairy-free dressing perfect to drizzle on salads or roasted vegetables.
