Crunch Mix: Red & Green Crystal Lettuce
It’s crunch time — but there’s no need to speed through this colorful, crispy blend. Antioxidant-rich greens grown in nutrient infused soil have a distinct texture and flavor that creates memorable dishes. For salad, add sunflower shoots and tomatoes. Grated cheese and seasonal fruits can add dimension. Toss with a light dressing for an entree. You can easily incorporate this colorful blend into appetizers and entrées!
Sunflower Shoots
Sunny days call for sunny sunflower shoots! These hydrating, earthy shoots are healthy for your body and soul. Take a bite of sunshine and enjoy mood-boosting vitamins and minerals.
Sunnies are crunchy and filling, and we love to add some spices or a dash of hot sauce when they’re eaten raw. Substitute these where spinach is called for, or dress up a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich. Shoot and score with these as a perfect texture add to the crunch mix.
Living Basil
Living basil stays fresher, brightens up your kitchen, and lasts longer than cut basil. Place this living plant in a warm, sunny location, and watch it grow! Living basil plants have a much longer shelf life than harvested, refrigerated basil, and retain more nutrients. Basil is excellent in many flavor profiles, and is a key ingredient in pesto. Pair with garlic to seamlessly blend into Italian foods, try it with cucumber or citrus, fresh mild cheeses, or in a meat marinade. Incorporate it seamlessly with this week’s tomatoes for pasta sauce or caprese salads!
Dill
What’s the dill with this flavorful, aromatic herb? Stay out of a pickle with this week’s dill — it can help you with appetizers, sauces, meat flavoring, and salads. It’s not just the taste that adds to your meal — dill is an herbal medicine that soothes tummies and strengthens bones.
Dill deepens flavors of grilled or baked fish, is useful in a variety of Mediterranean dishes, and pairs well with light fare like cucumbers, chickpeas, and sour cream. Anywhere you can add citrus, you can add an extra flavor dimension with dill! One of our favorite recipes is a family crowd pleaser: make a quick and savory pasta sauce with butter, oil, lemon, and dill.
Tomatoes
The perfect seasonal vegetable, these tomatoes are classic tastemakers. For a treat, slice these in half and add olive oil, sea salt, peppercorn, and living basil. Serve with or without sliced mild cheese like fresh mozzarella. Great on a grilled kabob or as a gem atop salads, these are also easy to add to chicken, beef, and Italian dishes. Anti-aging tomatoes have nutrients like lycopene that help prevent strokes.
