Three Ways to Use Cranberry Shrub this Thanksgiving
You can think of this Cranberry Shrub as a Thanksgiving multitasker. It combines festive cranberries with vinegar to make a versatile, incredibly refreshing ingredient for your table.
Shrubs, also known as drinking vinegars, have been around for centuries as a way to preserve fruit before refrigeration. Today, they’re making a well-deserved comeback for the bright, zippy flavor they add to cocktails, mocktails, and even salad dressings.
And as a bonus, vinegar-based shrubs are known to help with digestion, which is perfect for the biggest meal of the year.
Here are three easy ways to enjoy it:
1. Cranberry Bourbon Cocktail
Ingredients (makes 3)
6 ounces bourbon
3 ounces cranberry shrub (or more to your liking)
3 ounces seltzer water
3 sprigs fresh rosemary
Instructions
Shake the bourbon, shrub, and rosemary with ice.
Strain into glasses filled with ice.
Top with seltzer and garnish with rosemary.
2. Cranberry-Ginger Mocktail
Ingredients
3 ounces cranberry shrub
3 ounces orange juice
6 ounces ginger beer
Instructions
Swirl the shrub and orange juice with ice.
Top with ginger beer and give it a gentle stir.
3. Cranberry Shrub Vinaigrette
A tart vinaigrette brings balance to a rich Thanksgiving plate. Try it over buttery and bitter greens with sliced red onion and toasted walnuts.
Ingredients
¼ cup cranberry shrub
2 Tbsp orange juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ cup olive oil
2 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl until emulsified.
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
