Wasabi Arugula

Bright green wasabi arugula in roll of twine

What is wasabi arugula?

Wasabi Arugula is a unique and flavorful green that's not only delicious but also offers various culinary benefits. Also known as "wasabi rocket," it's a member of the mustard family, which includes cabbage, kale, and turnips. The leaves are lobed, have slightly jagged edge, and are bright green. It’s stems are slender and green. The plant can grow up to about 12-18 inches in height, but the leaves are usually harvested when they are young and tender, around 3-6 inches long.

The taste of wasabi arugula is quite spicy, much like the kick of wasabi, with a pungent, peppery bite. And, its wasabi-like heat is accompanied by a hint of mustard, typical of traditional arugula and other members of the mustard family. Despite its spiciness, the leaves are fresh and crisp, making them a refreshing addition to dishes.

How to prepare wasabi arugula

The wasabi arugula we grow at our organic farm in Arlington, VA has amazing flavor that lends itself to raw culinary applications. Cooking our wasabi arugula or serving it with an overly saucy meal may overpower its flavor and tame its delightful crunch. Here are some ways to prepare wasabi arugula:

  • Salads: Scatter whole leaves or roughly chopped wasabi arugula over salads to give them a peppery kick. Or mix wasabi arugula with other greens in a salad for a more subtle hint of its spicy flavor.

  • Garnish meat and fish dishes: Place a small bunch of wasabi arugula on top of seared fish, grilled steaks, chicken, or pork chops for a vibrant garnish that adds both taste and texture.

  • Top soups or pasta dishes: Sprinkle chopped wasabi arugula over Asian-style broths or noodle soups for a fresh, spicy finish. Or garnish pasta dishes by adding a few leaves on top of the plated pasta, especially cream or oil-based sauces.
