Zero-Waste Nutrient Cycling

Composting is an effective way to turn waste into something usable. At our organic farm in Arlington, VA, we built a system that utilizes composting to limit waste. Because plant waste naturally degrades to produce organic matter, we can use it to enrich our soil to help with the growth of our plants.

Waste = Food for New Plants

The above video shows Area 2 Farms’ Zero-Waste Nutrient Cycling compost system. All of the organic material from the waste of our revolving plant trays in our SILO is used. The system allows us to recycle previous nutrients into our new soil. Our food waste is food for the next generation of plants.

Worms - The Plant Decomposers

We use insects like bugs and worms to help keep our farm 100% organic and away from harmful materials. This has created a balanced biological system that keeps potential harmful pests in check by introducing nature's best plant protectors.

Worms recycle food scraps and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost, or worm compost. Worms eat food scraps, which become compost as they pass through the worm's body. Compost exits the worm through its' tail end. Their poop is full of nutrients from the 100% organic plants that they were eating.
