USDA Certified Organic
The Gold Standard for Food Quality
We’re proud to be USDA Certified Organic
This certification highlights our commitment to the health and quality of the food we grow. We see this gold-standard certificate is our baseline, an objective measure that we will maintain with integrity while we continue to get people closer to their food.
What does that really mean?
Organic agriculture, according to the USDA, applies “A set of cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that support the cycling of on-farm resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.” To do this, organic produce farmers do not use “synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, [or] genetic engineering” in their farming practices.
The organic certification officially labels the principles utilized in Area 2 Farms’ practices. Our controlled, indoor environment eliminates the need for pesticides and herbicides. Our regenerative soil program uses plant waste to build a healthy microbiome that yields diverse crops with high nutrient density. And since we exist in urban environments, Area 2 Farms is able to adapt organic agriculture principles to promote urban ecological balance.
Local Organic Farms are Rare
“Local” can have different definitions but to us it means, you have access to healthy, fresh produce within a reasonable distance of your home (10-Miles to be exact.)
Did you know that Area 2 is the only organic farm that sells produce directly to consumers within 10 miles of D.C? Well, we are.

This is just the beginning
The organic label is important - it is a quality standard for produce, as well as a guardrail to check and balance innovative practices against the natural systems that grow the most sustainable and nutrient-rich food. But, it’s only the beginning.
We want everyone to have access to healthy, fresh produce within their own communities which is why our goal is and always has been to bring the farm to you, not just the food.
