How to Eat Your Hydration
As the sometimes unbearable summer heat continues here in Arlington, VA, staying hydrated is more crucial than ever. And while drinking water is essential, water alone may not be providing optimal hydration. There is another refreshing way to ensure your body stays cool and hydrated: through the foods you eat.
At our organic farm, we grow a variety of vegetables that boast high water content to help you stay hydrated, as well as herbs that can be infused in water to increase its mineral content and lead to healthier, more flavorful hydration.
Beat the Summer Heat - Optimize Hydration
While sipping on water throughout the day is fundamental to staying hydrated, our bodies need electrolytes and nutrients to maintain optimal hydration levels; they help in the absorption and retention of water and make sure that hydration reaches our cells effectively. When you drink water without replenishing these vital nutrients, your body may struggle to retain the necessary hydration, especially during the hot summer months when heavy sweating is the norm.
Foods rich in water content provide the added benefits of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, making them an excellent supplement to your hydration routine. By consuming water-rich foods, you're not only quenching your thirst but also nourishing your body with essential nutrients that support overall health.

Using Herbs to Up-Level Your Water Routine
Incorporating herbs into your hydration routine can provide added benefits. Herbs not only enhance the flavor of your water but also add essential vitamins and minerals so that when you drink water, you are getting more thorough hydration.
Mint: Mint is a refreshing herb that can be easily added to water. It not only enhances the flavor but also aids digestion and provides a cooling effect, which is particularly beneficial in hot weather.
Basil: Basil adds a unique flavor to water. It contains vitamins A and K and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Parsley: Parsley has a bright, slightly peppery flavor and is high in vitamins A, C, and K.
How to Infuse Water with Herbs
Choose Fresh Herbs: Fresh herbs are more flavorful and nutritious than dried ones.
Prepare the Herbs: Rinse and add whole fresh herbs, including the stems.
Add to Water: Place the herbs in a jug or pitcher of water. You can combine herbs for unique flavor combinations.
Infuse: Let the water sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour, but several hours is better. For a stronger flavor, you can let it sit overnight.
Enjoy: You can refill the pitcher once or twice before discarding the herbs. You can also add slices of fruits like lemon, lime, or cucumber for added flavor, nutrients, and hydration.
It’s Hot - Stay Hydrated
As the summer heat persists, remember that hydration can be more exciting than simply drinking water. Incorporating certain foods into your meals can actually help your body stay hydrated. And infusing your water with herbs can remineralize plain, filtered water so that you get added health benefits while quenching your thirst.
