What is Honey?

Virginia honey

Honey is nature’s sweetener, crafted by honeybees from the nectar of flowers. In Virginia, our local honey comes from bees foraging on wildflowers, clover, and native plants across the state’s diverse terrain. Beekeepers harvest it by spinning frames from the hive in a centrifuge, extracting the raw, unfiltered honey while preserving its natural flavors and nutrients. Unlike mass-produced honey, which is often heavily processed and blended, our local Virginia honey stays true to its roots.

How to Prepare Honey

This honey is ready to use straight from the jar—no fuss required. Here are some simple ways to enjoy it:

  • Drizzle It: Add a spoonful over yogurt, oatmeal, or fresh fruit for a natural sweet boost.

  • Stir It In: Mix into tea, coffee, or warm water with lemon for a soothing drink.

  • Glaze It: Brush over roasted vegetables or meats in the last few minutes of cooking for a glossy, flavorful finish.

  • Spread It: Pair with bread or cheese for a quick, delicious bite.

Honey Health Benefits

  • Antioxidants: Rich in phenolic compounds, local honey helps combat oxidative stress and supports overall health.

  • Natural Energy: Its simple sugars—fructose and glucose—provide a quick, sustained energy lift.

  • Immune Support: Raw honey contains trace enzymes and pollen that may bolster immunity, especially when sourced locally.

  • Soothing Properties: Known for calming sore throats and coughs, it’s a time-tested remedy straight from the hive.

Honey Facts

  • It takes about 12 bees their entire lifetime to make one teaspoon of honey.

  • Virginia honey varies by season and region—spring batches might lean floral, while fall brings deeper, earthier notes from late-blooming plants.

  • Honey’s natural preservatives like low water content and high acidity make it an inhospitable environment for bacteria—archaeologists have found edible honey in ancient tombs!
