Simple Smashed Turnips
You can cook and mash turnips the same way you would mashed potatoes. To bulk them up, try cooking them with cauliflower or potatoes in any ratio you like.
Ingredients
5 medium turnips
3 cloves garlic
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1.5 Tbsp butter
1/4 cup milk, cream, sour cream, or Greek yogurt (or a combination)
Note: Adjust amounts to taste, and if mashing with another vegetable, increase quantities accordingly.
Optional add-ins:
Cheese
Favorite seasoning blends
Fresh herbs
Sautéed turnip greens stirred in with butter
Instructions
Quarter the turnips.
Bring them to a boil in salted water with the garlic cloves.
Reduce heat and simmer until fork-tender.
Drain well and transfer turnips (and garlic) to a bowl or stand mixer.
Season with a pinch each of salt and pepper.
Add butter and a splash of milk, cream, or a dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream. Start with a little, then adjust to taste.
Mash and mix using a potato masher or a fork.
Optional: Use a food processor for a smoother mash, but avoid overmixing if using potatoes, as it can become glutinous and gooey.
Stir in any optional add-ins like cheese, herbs, seasoning blends, or sautéed turnip greens.
