Arugula Crunch
This week’s arugula crunch gets its name because it’s so crispy. The peppery flavor and addicting texture is reason enough to it eat alone with some olive oil, salt and a squeeze of lemon (arugula is great with citrus). It also pairs well with nuts and cheeses, and will sauté nicely if you’d prefer something warm. Arugula is a low calorie, fiber- and protein-rich green, packed with vitamins and minerals. To keep it fresh, rinse and dry the greens, wrap them in a paper towel and refrigerate.
Microgreen Mix
Mix of Pea Shoots, Sunflower Shoots, Buckwheat Shoots, Radish Shoots
We combined our favorite shoots and microgreens in this nutrient-rich blend. Not to be confused with sprouts that germinate from soaked seeds, micros are harvested just when the first leaves emerge; shoots are harvested just before that. The youth of these greens means that they are tender, and compared to their mature counterparts, have higher doses of vitamins and minerals, and similar, but milder flavors. This blend will add depth and crunch to salads, sandwiches, or anything that could use a raw, earthy component.
Spearmint
Our organic spearmint will give you fresh breath for a Valentine’s Day kiss. The menthol in spearmint creates a cooling effect in the body, even though your body temperature doesn’t change. This is why a spearmint tea - great for healthy digestion of a recent meal - is so refreshing. This week, we’ll probably muddle our fresh spearmint into a cocktail and share it with a Valentine.
Tomatoes
Our organic tomatoes give that satisfying pop of flavor when your teeth break their delicate skin. Tomatoes’ color comes from lycopene - a powerful antioxidant which, unlike its other nutrients, actually gets stronger with heat. So, cooking these tomatoes is a great option to create something warm when the weather is chilly. We tend to prefer these little gems raw - simply halved and served with this week’s basil and arugula, drizzled with some olive oil, salt and pepper. Add them to the pan when you bake fish or meat to add a surprising brightness to your dish.
Basil
Our two-variety, living basil plant will sit on your countertop, give off that distinct basil aroma, and last much longer than harvested, refrigerated basil, and retain more nutrients. Basil is an ancient herb (part of the mint family) and has held many roles over the years - it has traditionally been a symbol of love, which makes it a perfect, fresh ingredient to add to a Valentine’s dinner at home with your loved ones. We like it with this week’s tomatoes for a pasta sauce or a caprese salad.
