What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are naturally occurring compounds found in foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, that help protect our cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals.

Antioxidants work by donating an electron to the free radicals, which makes them calm down and become stable. This process prevents the free radicals from causing further harm and keeps our cells healthier.

They are found in colorful fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other plant-based foods. By including these foods in our diet, we provide our body with a team of antioxidants that help protect us from cellular damage and promote overall well-being. This is why it’s important to eat the rainbow.

What are some examples of antioxidants?

  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): Found in fruits and vegetables, vitamin C is a potent water-soluble antioxidant that helps protect against free radicals in the aqueous (watery) compartments of cells.

  • Vitamin E: This fat-soluble vitamin is found in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E works in cell membranes, protecting fatty areas from oxidative damage.

  • Beta-carotene: A precursor to vitamin A, beta-carotene is found in colorful fruits and vegetables like carrots and leafy greens. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, particularly in lipid-rich areas of cells.

  • Selenium: This trace mineral is involved in the production of antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase. Good sources of selenium include whole grains.

  • Flavonoids: These compounds are found in a variety of plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, tea, and cocoa. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Resveratrol: Found in berries, resveratrol has been studied for its antioxidant and potential health-promoting effects.

  • Lycopene: This red pigment found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables acts as an antioxidant and is associated with various health benefits.
