Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of 20 February 2023

Asian Blend: Green & Purple Bok Choy + Red & Purple Mizuna

A beautiful blend of bok choy and mizuna brings some rich color to your plate with an earthy taste. Ground yourself with a classic salad dish rich in folate, iron, and vitamins A, C, and K.

Farmer’s recommendation: Effervescent citrus makes this blend dazzle, whether chilled or stir-fried. Walnuts, blueberries, and strawberries create a happy entree salad. Add chevre or another soft goat cheese and a spritz of lemon juice to this mix and eat raw or blanched. To liven up a sandwich, sprinkle in this blend with a bit of sea salt.

Radish Microgreens

Deep flavor and dense nutrients make radish micros a superfood suitable for many meals. The tangy taste profile of radish isn’t the only thing we love. Each bite has vitamins B5, K, C, E, and A. These micros are also full of folate, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron.

Farmer’s recommendation: The warm flavor will remind you that spring is just around the corner. These micros enhance eggplant, beef, or salmon steaks, and are a perfect garnish to a horseradish sauce. Add them to a lunch sandwich for a midday pick-me-up. Spinach salads burst in flavor with these micros in the mix, as do buttery potatoes.

Sunflower Shoots

Ready for some sun? These bright babies are worth their weight in gold, with a taste like a roasted sunflower seed and vitamins B6, K, A, C, E, iron, protein, and essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These sunnies are best served crisp and cold. There’s lots more to learn about sunflower shoots in our almanac.

Farmer’s recommendation: These big-tasting micros are delightful for a snack. If eating raw, add a hint of lemon or even dip in some spicy mustard. They will pep up turkey sandwiches or chicken salad, and can be used to garnish tapas or enhance the flavor of a pesto pasta dish. In a salad, these shoots pair well with arugula and shredded mozzarella.

Purple and Green Sage

This Week’s Harvest brings Mardi Gras colors from our lettuce blend to our herbs. Purple and green sage combine their woodsy, camphorous aromas for a tender, savory taste. The fresh herbs contain vitamins A and C, and are often used as a tonic for body and spirit. A natural astringent and antiseptic, let these delicious plants nourish you throughout this season.

Farmer’s recommendation: We love these sages infused in butter, added to a charcuterie spread, or muddled in a cocktail. For meals, include throughout with a crisp salad or add to any olive oil based sauce. Roasted cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cheese-based pastas come alive with the addition of these sages.

Wood Sorrel

This heart-shaped plant isn’t a shamrock or clover — it’s a fibrous tuber with a lot of vitamin C and a corresponding lemon citrus flavor. Good for the liver and for treating digestive issues, the tart taste comes from its oxalic acid.
Farmer’s recommendation: Wood sorrel adds a kick and can be used anywhere you’d use vinegar or lemon juice, such as salad dressings, on salmon steaks, and grilled vegetables. Add some taste to a salad, stew, or infuse with melted butter or cream-based dips and sauces.

Tomato

These tomatoes are irresistible as a popcorn-like snack, a salad topper, or an addition to a heavy meat dish or pasta. High in lycopene, tomatoes are well-known for their antioxidant properties. Tomatoes also contain vitamin B and E, as well as a dose of potassium.

Farmer’s recommendation: Cherry tomatoes are a bright addition to any meal, and can make their own salad course by cutting them in half, adding olive oil, sea salt, pepper, and any Area 2 Farms herb blend (we also love oregano and herbs de Provence). For cheese lovers, top a dollop of mild ricotta with halved tomatoes and drizzle a balsamic glaze to make an all-season side.
