Fourth Week of Spring Season 2024
Citrus Crunch (lettuce with red sorrel)
This week’s citrus crunch includes red sorrel, which is a tangy leafy green that contains vitamins C and A, and some B vitamins as well. You’ll enjoy the crunch and unique flavors in this lettuce blend. It’s perfect for upleveling your salad game, and our farming experts recommend it as a flavorful bed for quinoa, farro or pilafs.
Sunflower shoots
This week’s sunflower shoots are a great source of vitamins and minerals that you can easily incorporate into any snack or meal to add nutrient richness. They have a mild, nutty flavor and make raw dishes crunchier, or give that sometimes necessary texture to cooked food. These shoots will store great in the fridge with no fuss, keeping their crunch for the week.
Basil
This living basil plant will sit on your countertop, give off that distinct basil aroma, and last much longer than harvested, refrigerated basil, and retain more nutrients. Fresh basil is a perfect surprise in a salad or soup, and it will brighten sauces and marinades. We like it with this week’s tomatoes for pasta sauce or a caprese salad.
Tomatoes
Our tomatoes give that satisfying pop of flavor when your teeth break their delicate skin. They have a sweet taste that makes them great to eat raw. Their bright color comes from lycopene - a powerful antioxidant which, unlike other nutrients found in tomatoes like vitamin C, actually gets stronger with heat. So cooking these little gems is another option - add them to the pan when you bake fish or meat and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the depth they add to your dinner.
Borage microgreens
Unlike many microgreens that are baby vegetable plants, this week’s borage microgreens come from a flowering plant. The flavors will be reminiscent of cucumber with hints of melon. You can chop the micros and add them to sides like potato salad. They work very well in both alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails. Steep them in cool water and you’ll have spa-style hydration.
