Growing Something New in Historic Georgetown
Georgetown stands out for being both historic and innovative. Its cobblestone streets and preserved architecture make it easy to imagine life here centuries ago. At the same time, the neighborhood is full of experimental local businesses and a vibrant, youthful community.
Innovation in Georgetown doesn’t erase history, it preserves it. The Fountain Inn, where Thomas Jefferson once dined, now serves creative, modern cocktails. The old Washington Flour Mill has been repurposed into housing for the area’s growing population. And the historic C&O Canal, once a major transportation route, is now a scenic park and walking trail.
Just as Georgetown blends innovation with historic charm, Area 2 Farms uses modern methods to bring back the tradition of locally grown food. In many ways, our farm and Georgetown share a similar spirit: rooted in history, but looking forward.
Farming has deep roots in D.C.—farms once operated right in the city, including George Linder’s farm, the last of its kind, which closed in 1939. Since then, much of the food eaten in Georgetown, and across the DMV, has been grown on large industrial farms, traveling thousands of miles before it reaches your plate. That distance comes at a cost: food loses freshness, nutrients, and the personal connection that comes with knowing where it came from.
Area 2 Farms may look different from Linder’s, but our mission is similar: to grow fresh food locally for our Georgetown community. Our farming methods combine traditional practices with the latest technology to grow smarter, fresher, and more sustainably:
We grow indoors, but we grow in soil. We invest in soil because healthy soil is the foundation of our organic farm and the strongest link between food and the health of our community. That’s rare in the world of indoor farming, where many operations use hydroponic systems and synthetic nutrient solutions.
We focus on crop diversity. Because we’re local and can grow year-round, we’re able to grow varieties of vegetables that you will not find at a grocery store.
We use our proprietary technology, called SILO, that rotates crops through a growing structure that replicates a plant's full day cycle.
We compost, creating a closed-loop system that regenerates soil and supports the health of our plants and the health of our community.
Just like Georgetown, Area 2 Farms is rooted in history and powered by forward-thinking ideas. We bring farms back into neighborhoods, so you can know your farmers, your food, and where it all comes from.
We’re not just growing vegetables, we’re building relationships, restoring local food traditions, and investing in the health of our community. Whether you’re walking the C&O Canal or opening your Area 2 Farms’ CSA delivery, we hope you feel the same sense of connection to place, to season, and to something meaningful.
We’re your neighborhood farmers, and we’re excited to be part of Georgetown’s story.
