What is Himalayan Pink Salt?

Himalayan pink salt isn’t your average table salt. It’s mined from ancient salt deposits in the Punjab region of Pakistan, near the Himalayan foothills. Formed over millions of years from evaporated prehistoric oceans, it gets its signature pink color from trace minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium. Unlike heavily processed white salt, this stuff is unrefined and chunky, giving you a pure flavor.

How to Prepare Himalayan Pink Salt

You can use this salt like any other kind—no complicated recipes required. You can keep it coarse to add texture, or grind it if you prefer a finer salt. Here are some simple, creative ways to sprinkle it into your week:

  • Vegetable Finisher: Grab your fresh greens and roast or sauté them. Right at the end, hit them with a pinch of Himalayan pink salt for a flavor pop that’s crisp and clean.

  • Salt Rim: Wet the rim of a glass with a lemon wedge, dip it in a shallow dish of the Himalayan pink salt, and you’ve got a fancy edge for water, iced tea, or something stronger if it’s been a long day.

  • Quick Pickle: Toss some sliced cucumbers, carrots, radishes, or Area 2 Farms’ turnips from the into a jar with vinegar, water, and a teaspoon of this salt. Let it sit overnight in the fridge–it will be tangy and crunchy..

  • Salty Butter: Mash a pinch of Himalayan pink salt into softened butter, spread it on bread, and top with herbs or greens.

Himalayan Pink Salt Health Benefits

The trace minerals in Himalayan pink salt— like magnesium, calcium, and potassium—add a nutritional boost you won’t find in regular iodized salt. It’s also less processed than table salt, so you don’t need to worry about extra chemicals. Plus, a little goes a long way, making it easy to cut back on sodium without sacrificing taste.

Himalayan Pink Salts Facts

  • Old as Dirt: The Khewra Salt Mine, where most of this comes from, dates back over 250 million years.

  • Pink Color: The pinker the salt, the more iron oxide (rust) it’s packing. Darker chunks can even look red.

  • Salt Lamps: It’s sometimes carved into slabs for grilling or making salt lamps.

  • Hand-Harvested: Miners chip it out by hand, keeping it low-tech and traditional.
