Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of 13 March 2023
Irish Greens
lettuce, cabbage, kale
Does this count as wearing green? This lucky blend is a nutritional pot of gold! Airy cabbage and bright lettuce balance distinctive kale into an unforgettable combination. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, and B6, you’ll also find calcium, potassium, and manganese, magnesium, and folate within.
Farmer’s recommendation: Make a springy salad with the St. Patrick’s Blend, or have them form a base for meat or quinoa. Warm and sauté with salt and olive or sunflower oil and add spice to taste. Eat these fresh for hydration, and add vinegar to a dressing to bring forth the full flavor profile.
Broccoli Microgreens
Power up your nutrition profile with this superfood. High in cancer-fighting sulforaphane, these also contain calcium, B vitamins, vitamins A, C, and E, magnesium, iron, and zinc. These crunchy treats are more nutrient-packed than fully grown broccoli.
Farmer’s recommendation: Try them as a topper for tomato soup or deviled eggs, or to add crunch to hearty breakfasts. Delicious and cheery, broccoli micros are a perfect snack, nice on a salad, and add texture to any sandwich.
Radish Microgreens
Radish micros are a lucky charm with their kick of flavor. You’ll love these tiny superfoods for their taste and nutrients. With the tangy profile of radish, each bite has vitamins A, B5, C, K, and E, plus folate, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron.
Farmer’s recommendation: Lots of warm flavor makes these delectable on luncheon sandwiches or in mild dips. We add them to spinach salads, or pair with salmon and hearty meat dishes. For a twist, add them into a side of buttery potatoes.
Living Basil Plant
It’s alive! We couldn’t resist starting off your spring with a purple basil plant for the season. This living, aromatic herb is a perfect addition to your kitchen, and can be a meal enhancer, decorative potpourri, or as an educational tool to teach about plant life cycles and earth science.
Farmer’s recommendation: Came straight from the farm, enjoy the smell and taste as long as you want to keep it alive. CARE: Water every other day or when the soil becomes dry. Keep in a place where it can reach sunlight every day. Harvest when you are ready to enjoy!
Oregano
Natural antibiotics, oregano is more potent and hardier than its more delicate cousin, marjoram. High in vitamin A, this herb also contains vitamins C, and K. Oregano is often used in Italian and Mediterranean cuisines.
Buzz buttons and lemon verbena will brighten up your dishes with flavor, aroma, and medicinal value. Lemon verbena has melatonin, and this blend helps decrease oxidative stress, protecting muscles against damage.
Farmer’s recommendation: Sprinkle on a salad, eat as a raw treat, or add in to top a stir fry. You’ll find them good for sleep when used as a tea, but eaten raw, these herbs are a cleansing tonic that will give you a lively “buzz”! Try it out as a cocktail or mocktail too!
