Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of July 24th 2023

Kale

This kale mix is hearty, frilly, and has a sweeter, peppery flavor. Antioxidant and fiber rich kale can be crisped into crunchy snacks in the oven, used for the base of a salad or pesto, and can liven up anything that’s hot off the grill. We’ve moved the farm to your neighborhood to bring you nutritious superfood favorites like this perfectly mixed kale.

Mild Microgreens Mix

Mixing it up is a theme of this week, and we know you’ll love these mild microgreens. Our farming experts recommend them as a topper for salads, meat entrees, or added to family taco night. Hydrating and full of vitamins, we love these micros added to grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches, or even used in omelets and smoothies!

Mirepoix

It’s a week full of mixes, so mirepoix makes sense! Mirepoix (pronounced meer-pwah) is a traditional French recipe of diced celery, carrots, and onions. This versatile mix makes a culinary base for summer stews, nutritious broths, and gumbo. Micronutrients, digestive enhancing fiber, and vitamin C make an aromatic combo of medicinal local food

Traditionally diced into small cubes and slowly cooked in healthy fat (butter or oil) over low to medium heat for a base, you can grill mirepoix, or use it in place of a bed of rice or add to quinoa. For more information, read our mirepoix crop guide.

Tomatoes

The perfect seasonal vegetable, these tomatoes are classic tastemakers. For a treat, slice these in half and add olive oil, sea salt, peppercorn, and living basil. Serve with or without sliced mild cheese like fresh mozzarella. Great on a grilled kabob or as a gem atop salads, these are also easy to add to chicken, beef, and Italian dishes. We recommend the Organic Butcher of Mclean. Anti-aging tomatoes have nutrients like lycopene that help prevent strokes. Our local Arlington, VA farm grows medicinal produce in your neighborhood and we deliver straight to your door.

Borage Flowers

Edible flowers make for beautiful dishes and added flavor. Borage flowers taste like cucumber, and creates visual zest for salads, beverages, or appetizer spreads. Top a finger sandwich or luncheon dip to delight genteel guests, or surprise your loved ones with these flowers by freezing them into ice cubes and add to cocktails or iced tea.
