Babe Ruth's Home Plate Farm
Babe Ruth, known as The Great Bambino and the Sultan of Swat, is an American icon, widely known as one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Ruth began his career as a pitcher but achieved his greatest success as a slugger. Through his 22-season career, Ruth’s lifetime statistics include:
714 home runs
2,873 hits
506 doubles
2,174 runs
2,214 RBIs
.342 batting average
.474 on-base percentage
.690 slugging percentage.
One of the greatest American sports heroes, Ruth was among the five inaugural members inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1936.
The first batter to hit 500 career home runs, and the first to hit 30, 40, 50, and 60 homers in one season, Ruth held this record for 34 years until Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961.
In 1922, Babe Ruth purchased a farm in Sudbury, Massachusetts that has come to be known as Home Plate Farm. To this day, there is baseball-themed signage and a weather vane showing the Bambino in full swing.
Home Plate Farm became Babe Ruth's sanctuary, where he resided with his family. While engaging in agricultural pursuits, Ruth's larger-than-life personality led to playful and mischievous behavior. Notably, he and his friends once threw a piano into the farm's pond.
One urban legend ties the 86-year championship drought of the Red Sox — the infamous Curse of the Bambino — to Home Plate Farm. In August of 2004, it’s said that Lee Gavin, a teenager living at the farm, was struck by a ball at Fenway Park. Later that year, the Red Sox won the World Series.
