Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of February 26th, 2024

This Menu is subject to change. We deliver on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Order by 2/28/24 and get it delivered on 2/29/24

Kale

This week’s kale is tender and less bitter than other kale varieties you might be used to. Adding any kale to your diet has many benefits, but, like all veggies, the source matters. Kale consistently lands on the Environment Working Group’s Dirty Dozen (it is third on 2023’s list), as it contains traces of harmful pesticides. By eating locally grown, organic produce, you can be sure that your kale is only adding to your health, not compromising it.

Pea Shoots

These baby pea plants are grown in soil and harvested just eight days after they are planted. Like other shoots and microgreens, they are a mighty source of micronutrients. Our organic pea shoots are sweet, a little grassy, and super crunchy, which means they are great raw, but can also be served warm, used to replace spinach or chard in most cases - think pea shoot artichoke dip. To store pea shoots, rinse and let dry; you can wrap them in a paper towel to keep moisture away before you refrigerate them.

Dill

This week’s herb is bright and fresh and very quickly becomes the highlighted flavor, which is grassy with a hint of licorice, of many dishes. It’s also beautiful - bright green and feathery, fresh dill can be used as a surprise in a salad or dressing, or used as a meat or vegetable seasoning. Just remember that dill will lose its sharp flavor when cooked for too long, so throw it in late, or add some more at the last minute. When the weather is cool, try this dill-forward chicken noodle soup

Turnips

We harvest this week’s Harukei turnips when they are about the size of a golf ball. They are round, bright white with bright green leaves, and have a mild, sweet flavor compared to traditional turnips. You can eat the root and its leaves, prepared together or separately. Since they have a crisp, juicy texture and sweet, slightly nutty flavor, we love these raw, pickled or shredded into a coleslaw. Sautéing the roots and the greens together or roasting the roots alone are both great side dishes.

Chamomile

Chamomile is known for its calming effects; even walking by the growing chamomile at the farm is relaxing. This week, you can definitely enhance your nighttime ritual with fresh chamomile - it has a mild sedative effect that induces sleep when made into a tea. Just add chamomile flowers to boiling water and steep for 10 minutes. Chamomile also chills out your digestion, so adding it to salads or using it to make a dressing are great, less obvious options.
