Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of 3 April 2023
Mahogany Mix (Spring Mix, Purple Mizuna, Chinese Mahogany)
This unique salad blend is perfect for spring colds, as it’s high in vitamins C, B6, K, A and E, and boasts calcium, chlorophyll, and amino acids. Mizuna is a cousin of kale, and adds a tasteful frill to a spring mix. Chinese mahogany complements with a savory, meaty flavor to make this blend truly one of a kind!
Farmer’s recommendation: Add oranges, cranberries, and walnuts to create a flavor forward salad. Perfect for an entree or a full meal. The healing properties of Chinese mahogany are more pronounced when this mix is parboiled into a stir fry or used atop a rice or egg dish.
Broccoli Microgreens
Power up your plate with this earthy superfood that has more nutrients than its full grown counterpart! High in cancer-fighting sulforaphane, broccoli micros have calcium, B vitamins, vitamins A, C, and E, magnesium, iron, and zinc. These crunchy treats are more nutrient-packed than fully grown broccoli.
Farmer’s recommendation: Try broccoli micros as a topper for tomato soup or deviled eggs, or use them to add a crunch to a hearty breakfast. These cheery micros are a perfect snack, add a pop and crunch to a salad, and bring texture to any sandwich.
Radish Microgreens
Radish micros are a lucky charm with their kick of flavor. You’ll love these tiny superfoods for their taste and nutrients. With the tangy profile of radish, each bite has vitamins A, B5, C, K, and E, plus folate, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron.
Farmer’s recommendation: Lots of warm flavor makes these delectable on luncheon sandwiches or in mild dips. We add them to spring salads, or pair with salmon and hearty meat dishes. For a twist, add them into a side of buttery potatoes.
Marjoram
A natural antibiotic, think of marjoram as a sweeter, more delicate version of oregano. This velvety, herbaceous spice is best used to add dimension and warmth to a dish, but it’s also a powerful medicine with vitamins C, A, and K. Try it in a stew or bisque, or add to pasta or a mixed grill.
Farmer’s recommendation: Marjoram can be used in high quantities without being overly dominant as a flavor profile. Tomato and broth-based soups will shine when marjoram is added to the mix. Add to savory sauces, marinades and glazes for meat or vegetables, and to add flavor to egg and rice-based dishes.
Carrots
It’s the season for bunny food, and our carrots are a farm favorite. Earthy and crunchy, these spring staples are high in vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber. These carrots shave perfectly into the mahogany mix for a truly seasonal salad.
Farmer’s recommendation: Carrots are perfect raw for a snack, grated over bahn mi, and cooked into poultry dishes, stir fry, and roasts. Add to onions, peas, and corn for a succotash, or juice into a smoothie!
Basil Plant
It’s alive! We couldn’t resist starting off your spring with a purple basil plant for the season. This living, aromatic herb is a perfect addition to your kitchen, and can be a meal enhancer, decorative potpourri, or used as an educational tool to teach your family about plant life cycles and earth science.
