Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of 10 April 2023

Bunny Blend

A new Area 2 Farms feature for your tastebuds and your health, this salad mix features crunchy romaine lettuce, buttery, scoop-shaped sweet green tatsoi, and fluttery carrot greens. This mix is majorly nutritious, with calcium, iron, potassium, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K.

Farmer’s recommendation: It’s a new mix, so we recommend trying a springtime salad this week! Tatsoi and carrot tops blend into a perfect palate with whispers of parsley and mustard, and classic romaine adds a layer of texture and taste. This mix tastes great sautéed, too. Just add lemon zest, a pinch of sea salt, and a swig of your favorite oil.

Cabbage Microgreens

Purple and green add a pop of color to the crunchy goodness of these micros, and have several times the nutrition of the large cabbage plant. Antioxidant and amino acid rich, these microgreens have folate, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, and vitamins K, C, and A.

Farmer’s recommendation: The perfect topper for bahn mi sandwiches or taco night, these micros also put on a good show accompanying dinner entrees and sprinkled in sandwiches. Because they paid well with strong cheeses, we place them on charcuterie spreads for some added crunch and nutrition.

Sunflower Shoots

Thick and earthy, these sunny shoots are healthy for your body and soul. Full of iron, potassium, and magnesium, this fibrous bite of sunshine contains a spectrum of vitamins, such as D, E, B, A.

Farmer’s recommendation: Hearty little sunnies are crunchy and filling, and we love to add some spices or a dash of hot sauce and have a snack. Substitute these in dips where you’d use spinach, or add to a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich. Try with lemon thyme to top pastas and pestos.

Lemon Thyme + Red Vein Sorrel

Lemon Thyme is an aromatic herb with tiny, delicate leaves, our lemon thyme is a citrus flavored wonder. This delightful natural antibacterial has thymol and vitamins B, C, and D. This can help bust the sniffles. Sorrel is not just a leafy herb, it’s a whole vibe. Spring colors of green and crimson make these pretty leaves pop just as much as their tart flavor! This antioxidant rich treat stimulates the immune system and is used in many plant-based medicinal cocktails. It has powerful phytochemicals and vitamins B, C, and A.

Farmer’s recommendation (Lemon Thyme): Round out a salad or meal in need of earthy citrus, especially meat and seafood dishes. Lemon thyme is also fun in fruit-based desserts or snacks. Native to the Mediterranean, this herb tastes perfect added to hummus, tabouleh, and olive oil based dips and dressings.

Farmer’s recommendation (Red Vein Sorrel): Treat your body and tastebuds to some goodness from the earth by adding the ultra tart sorrel to potatoes, pastas, or egg-based dishes. A digestion aid, we prefer to pair this with creamy cheeses and thicker foods, as its big flavor needs rich food to properly shine.

Spring Onion

These bulb-bottomed rapscallions are armed with vitamin C and calcium, and help fight inflammation and may lower cholesterol. A seasonal classic, this flavor will add dimension when paired with other greens included in this week’s harvest.

Farmer’s recommendation: We love to eat these flavor-packed crunchers sliced raw in a salad, but they are also a pitch-perfect garnish for meats and sides. No stir fry is complete without them! Cook them awhile over medium heat to bring forth an unforgettable sweetness.  Try Mirepoix!

Butterflies and Flowers

You’ll get butterflies over this one! Shamrock leaves have isoflavin, potassium, and calcium, and are a versatile conversation piece that supply tasty magic to any meal. Skip the sorrel and lemon thyme if you’re adding these mild beauties to your meal so that they are not overpowered!

“The earth laughs in flowers,” penned Emerson, who loved farm fresh produce and edible blooms as much as we do. Add a farm fresh aesthetic and earthen taste to any dish. Enjoy the spring harvest deliberately with these antioxidant-rich delicacies.
