Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of May 1 2023

Citrus Mix: Sorrel + Lettuce

Oh, the flavor! This mix is both tart and cooling with a razor sharp taste. Spring colors make the leafy sorrel herb turn your greens into a work of art. This antioxidant rich treat stimulates the immune system, as sorrel is used for plant-based medicine. Powerful phytochemicals accompany vitamins B, C, and A in this unique mix for the new month.

Farmer’s recommendation: Treat your body and taste buds to some goodness! Add citrus mix starter salad in as a digestion aid with a rich main course. We also love to make it the feature by pairing with creamy cheese or dressing and sprinkling in rich berries or pomegranate seeds.

Kohlrabi Microgreens

Not just a pretty plant, kohlrabi microgreens have a mild, warming flavor that’s wholly unique. Best described as a mix between the flavors and textures of broccoli and radish micros, we are pleased to deliver these for the first time this year! Rich in vitamins B6 and C, these inflammation-fighting micros have calcium, phosphorus, potassium, thiamin, and folate.

Farmer’s recommendation: Add a little sea salt or spice mix and serve chilled for a snack, or add to the top of egg, meat, or starchy dishes. These special micros add new textures and layers to our citrus salad mix, adding a touch of warmth to the tartness. If you want a head start on summer, try atop a lobster roll or added to avocado toast.

Sunflower Shoots

Thick and earthy, these sunny shoots are healthy for your body and soul. Full of iron, potassium, and magnesium, this bite of sunshine contains a spectrum of vitamins, such as D, E, B, and A.

Farmer’s recommendation: Hearty little sunnies are crunchy and filling, and we love to add some spices or a dash of hot sauce and have a snack. Substitute these in dips where you’d use spinach, or add to a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich. Try with lemon thyme to top pastas and pestos. Perfect on top of this week’s citrus mix.

Mint

Mint cures headaches and is full of antioxidants. It also contains vitamins A, B, and C, plus magnesium, and phosphorus. Chew on a few leaves to freshen your breath, improve your mood, or reset your senses. Steep in a tea for a full body tonic as a perfect end to your day.

Farmer’s recommendation: Add to meat main courses right before serving, or blend into dips, pestos, and smoothies. For dessert and a nightcap, stick a few of the velvety leaves into ice cream or mix into a fruit salad, then muddle into rum, gin, or bourbon-based cocktails. For a sophisticated garnish, coat the leaves in delicate milk chocolate and serve with a strawberry or Irish coffee.

Spring Onion

These bulb-bottomed rapscallions are armed with vitamin C and calcium, and help fight inflammation and may lower cholesterol. A seasonal classic, this flavor adds dimension to any dish.

Farmer’s recommendation: We love to eat these flavor-packed crunchers sliced raw in a salad, and they’re pitch-perfect to top meats and sides. No stir fry is complete without them! Cook them awhile over medium heat to bring forth an unforgettable sweetness.

Living Basil

We’re bringing some of the farm to your kitchen with a living basil plant. Best kept in at least partial sunlight, this living, aromatic herb is a perfect addition to your kitchen. Great for a meal enhancer, or decorative potpourri, use this plant as an educational tool to teach your family about earth science.
