Italian Herbs

At Area 2 Farms, an organic farm based in Arlington, VA, we are dedicated to growing fresh, USDA-certified organic produce for the neighborhoods in the DMV. Our blend of Italian herbs is no exception.

What are Italian Herbs?

When we deliver Italian herbs, we pair Italian large leaf basil and Italian oregano, both members of the mint family, Lamiaceae. This family is renowned for its aromatic herbs, many of which are culinary staples.

Italian large leaf basil is characterized by its broad, smooth leaves and sweet, slightly peppery flavor with hints of clove and anise. Originating in India and having traveled through ancient Egypt and Greece, basil became a central herb in Italian cuisine, particularly pesto and tomato-based dishes.

Italian oregano, often referred to as the “pizza herb,” has a bold, earthy flavor with peppery and citrus undertones. Native to the Mediterranean region, oregano has long been used for its medicinal and culinary benefits. Its name translates to "joy of the mountains," referencing the plant’s tendency to thrive in sun-soaked, rocky landscapes.

We grow these herbs in nutrient-rich soil and harvest them at their peak ripeness to capture their full aroma, flavor, and nutrient content. Basil’s bright, sweet taste is perfectly balanced by oregano’s savory, robust notes. Together, they form a harmonious blend that elevates Italian-inspired dishes like marinara, soups, roasted vegetables, and even herb-infused oils. By choosing fresh herbs over dried, you’ll experience their full complexity and fresh taste, just as nature intended.

How to Prepare Italian Herbs

Using fresh herbs unlocks more flavor and texture than dried alternatives.

  • Chopping: Rinse under cool water and gently pat dry. Finely chop for maximum flavor.

  • Herb-Infused Olive Oil: Infuse olive oil with both herbs to drizzle over salads or roasted vegetables.

  • Italian Herb Butter: Blend softened butter with the herbs for a compound butter to spread on bread or melt over grilled meats.

  • Pesto: Make a fresh pesto with garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and Parmesan for pastas, pizzas, or sandwiches.
