Area 2 Farms Local Organic Harvest for the Week of May 15 2023
Baby Kale + Baby Beet Leaf
Flavorful, versatile, and full of texture — now that’s a salad! Baby kale and baby beet leaf combine the best crunch of a green salad with the oaky, slightly astringent taste. Plenty of iron, vitamins A, K, and C, and calcium accompany this late spring salad mix.
Farmer’s recommendation: We love a bed of greens, so try this blend as a salad. For textured veggie tacos, add a mixed grill. Or, these beautiful blanch into a stir fry with carrots, onion, and a choice of protein.
Mizuna Microgreens
Don’t underestimate this mild micro! It’s got zinc, chlorophyll, phosphorous, magnesium, and iron — plus vitamins B, K, A, C, and E. Give these a try and see why they’re a farm favorite!
Farmer’s recommendation: Best eaten raw so that you get the nutrients in full effect, these taste perfect atop our baby kale salad blend. Sprinkle them on dips or bisques, or serve them with breakfast omelets or as a garnish on a flavor-forward dinner entrée.
Garlic Chives + Oregano
Garlic chives can help ward off spring sniffles with immunity-boosting vitamins C, A, potassium, and iron. Don’t you dare say oregaNO to this freshly harvested herb. Oregano has natural minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
Farmer’s recommendation: Garlic chives taste like a cross between garlic and green onion, and you’ll always need these flavors to complete a savory meal. Perfect for stir fry, mixed grill, or potatoes au gratin.
Farmer’s recommendation: Synonymous with Italian dishes, perfect for pilafs, and creating a beautiful aromatic experience for meat marinades or garnishes, our oregano was harvested this week. Sprinkle on cream cheese to top a bagel! It’s great with our hakurei turnips.
Hakurei Turnips
Warm spice and earthy notes accompany texture for a lively, versatile vegetable grown in our nutrient enhanced farm soil. Packed with vitamins C, B6, and E, these edible roots also include fiber, potassium, and vitamins K and A.
Farmer’s recommendation: These turnips are famous for tasting best raw and fresh from the harvest. Sometimes known as the salad turnip, these special root vegetables can also be prepared on the stove in 30 minutes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a filling midday snack, or use creatively with miso, ginger, or orange.
Buzz Button & Lemon Verbena
Buzz buttons and lemon verbena will brighten up your dishes with flavor, aroma, and medicinal value. Buzz buttons will boost a mood, and lemon verbena has melatonin. This blend helps decrease oxidative stress, protecting muscles against damage.
Farmer’s recommendation: Try out the buzz button cocktail Buzz these ‘round your weekly meals for a spring zing! Sprinkle on a salad, eat as a raw treat, or add in to top a stir fry. You’ll find them good for sleep when used as a tea, but eaten raw, these herbs are a cleansing tonic that will give you a lively “buzz”!
